Around the Lake

Harwood Lake Heroes !

Did you see them this winter?  Jake Young and Broc Watkins came to the rescue of a swan frozen in the ice in the center of the lake – not a risk-free or easy task, with variable ice thickness on the south side of the lake; open water on the north side. In addition, there was the uncertainty of the swan’s health, and if would start to fly as they approached, possibly tipping them over into the icy water. Despite the logistical unknowns and risk, the Harwood southside neighbors knew they had to do something to try and save the swan. They transported their kayaks to the north side of the lake and launched them into the very cold, open water. From the open water, they paddled then broke through the ice to the swan. Fortunately, the swan worked itself free of the ice trying to escape Broc and Jake but did not (or could not) fly away. Instead, it followed the path Jake and Broc made through the ice and returned to open water.  Jake and Broc returned safely to shore. After a few days in the open water, the swan appeared to recover and rejoin other swans.

Thank you, Broc and Jake, for going above-and-beyond and putting the Harwood Lake Association Mission Statement into action!

Our very own , Jim Kings , was awarded the 2019 Cass County Conservation Ambassador of the Year award. Jim was recognized for his passion for conservation , his commitment to lake health and his positive attitude. Jim certainly deserved this recognition for his countless hours and monetary contributions to Harwood Lake.
Jim was also presented with a Presidential gavel that will be handed down to each President of Harwood Lake. The gavel was given to Jim by Rod Haugh whose Grandfather made it in 1962 here at Harwood Lake.
